The theme of Kathy's Garden Party was “All Dolled Up,” inspired by Barbie’s 50th birthday. As always, the food was great — sliders, crab cakes, slices of grilled chicken wraps. And the “Dream Girl” cocktail was a glass of champagne drizzled with something sweet and garnished with a raspberry. Yum.
Ben also liked the cookies.
At every Garden Party, Kathy’s family and friends find a new way to display the auction items in a runway show. This year, the models wore pretty dresses and teased hair to show off the Barbie- and doll-themed artwork.
Then came the live auction.
To my surprise, I was able to bid on something successfully! Well, Ben helped. We bought a pair of framed photographs, “Ethel’s flowers” by Janice Tonz. A woman who sat in front of us said that the artist took the photos in Colorado. I would like to find out more about Janice and her work.
As in years past, I made a charm bracelet for the show. If you want to see it, click on the “Preview artwork for All Dolled Up” icon on the Grace Events page. “Pretty in pastels” is on page 7.
You can also see the bracelet I made for last year's event. I'm already excited about next year's theme and how I can turn it into a bracelet!

Here's some info about the photos, from an email I received from Janice Tonz. (Thanks, Janice, for letting me share this!):
Bonnie Strigenz and I have been close friends since 6th grade, when we met in church. My path led to Colorado, where I currently work as a prosecuting attorney for the City and County of Denver. I have heard Bonnie talk about the Grace Foundation and the annual auction for many years, and this was the first year I contributed photos. The reason why the catalog listed my photos as "Ethel's Flowers" is that in the summer of 2008, I visited Bonnie's mother, Ethel and took photographs of flowers in the courtyard of her home. I framed two of them, and titled them "Ethel I" and "Ethel II". Ethel died last December. Bonnie donated one photo to the home where her mother lived, and kept one in her office.
Photography has been a hobby of mine for many years. In the 80's I dabbled in black and white. About 5 years ago, I began experimenting with digital photography. Wildflowers are my speciality. I love the mountains and many outdoor activities, including hiking. Friends of mine have a secluded cabin in the mountains in an old mining town called Fulford. Every summer I take thousands of photos of wildflowers as I hike around the cabin.
The Rocky Mountain Columbine or Blue Columbine is the Colorado state flower, and is by far my favorite wildflower. They grow abundantly all around Fulford, and usually peak in July. The Red Columbine is more rare than the Blue Columbine and is equally as beautiful. What I tried to capture was not only the beauty of these wildflowers, but also the sense of peace and calm that they invoke.
